Laser hair removal is by far the fastest and least expensive hair removal treatment method available. Over a lifetime of shaving most women will spend the equivalent of about 60-70 days of time shaving their legs and over $12,000 on shaving supplies, or over $30,000 on waxing. Men spend approximately 45 days of their lives shaving their face and neck!

The Hair Growth Cycle

Stage 1 - Anagen Phase

During the anagen phase your hair follicles are actively growing hair. This is the longest phase of hair growth. The majority of hair is in the anagen phase at any given time. The length of the anagen phase differs with different types of hair. The anagen phase for facial and pubic hairs is much shorter than hair on your scalp.

Stage 2 - Catagen Phase

In the catagen phase the hair follicles shrink and the rate at which the hair grows is much slower. Eventually the hair starts to separate from the hair follicle, but it’s still attached.

Stage 3 - Telogen Phase

Hair does not grow during the telogen phase. Some may fall out but usually they are still attached.

Stage 4 - Exogen Phase

The exogen phase is an extension of both the telogen stage of hair growth. During the exogen phase, the hair falls out. During this time the hair follicle may rest a while before growing new hair, or it may immediately start forming a new hair and go right back into the anagen phase.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

We use the Leutronic Clarity laser which has both the Alexandrite laser for light skin and the Nd: Yag for dark skin. Using both platforms allows us to safely customize laser hair removal treatments for individuals with varying skin tones and hair types, on all body parts with precision and speed. People with darker skin usually need more treatments than lighter-skinned people, and certain body parts respond faster than others, but everyone can become hair-free regardless of skin colour. The Leutronic Clarity is also very good at destroying fine hairs.

The handpiece emits pulses of light energy into the hair follicles. The energy is absorbed and converted to heat, which destroys the hair-producing cells at the root. The treated follicles will become damaged or destroyed. If damaged the new hair will grow in thinner and if destroyed the hair will exfoliate and that follicle will no longer generate new hair growth. Multiple treatments are required because of the hair growth cycles and it’s at these subsequent appointments that we can retarget the damaged follicles again to destroy their ability to grow more hair.

Conditions Affecting Hair Growth

Hair growth can be impacted with various hormonal conditions such as puberty, pregnancy, poly-cystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), menopause and other hair growth disorders, medical conditions or medications. These conditions sometimes mean that regardless of what kind of hair removal therapy you are using you may still regularly regrow some hair. For people with hair growth disorders, PCOS and for people who are transitioning, a discount is given for maintenance appointments (after initial treatment is complete). A doctor’s note is required to access this discount.

“The most common feedback I receive is how liberating it is to have their time and thoughts freed from the burden of shaving or waxing. “I saved so much time not shaving!” and “I never have to think about it anymore!” are everyday conversations around here.”
- Vicki Peters

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I prepare for my treatment?

Avoid waxing or tweezing or electrolysis for 4-6 weeks prior to your consultation as we want you to come to your consultation with hair. We need to see the thickness, colour, density before we treat you.

Avoid tanning, including self-tanning products for 3-4 weeks prior to treatment. Avoid tanning for 3-4 weeks after treatment. Both sun and lasers are UV light. Too much UV light causes burning. This is why we make this recommendation.

Shave the area being treated 24 hours prior to your appointment. If you can’t shave the area (eg. back) we can shave for you for an additional $50 fee.

What can I expect after laser hair removal?

After the hair follicles are damaged by laser, the hairs remain in the follicles for 7 to 14 days. During this time, the hairs will appear to be growing, however this is not new growth. The hair is actually being exfoliated from the follicle. To minimize chances of irritating the follicle do not pluck hair at this stage. Just let it fall out naturally.

The skin can become quite red immediately after treatment, however this fades usually within the first hour. Sometimes people feel a little itchy during this time but nothing that is bothersome. Most people experience no negative side effects.

How many treatments are necessary?

Only hair in the active growth stage (anagen phase) of the growth cycle is affected; therefore, multiple treatments are needed. Treatment is conducted every 4-8 weeks, depending on the site treated, until a satisfactory result is seen. The number of treatments required varies depending on the location, genetics, hair type, hair colour, skin colour etc., but typically 6 or more treatments are required for best results.

Who is a good candidate for Laser Hair Removal?

The short answer? Almost everyone!

Regardless of gender, age or ethnicity, if you have any unwanted hair that you would like permanently and painlessly removed, then Laser Hair Removal is the option for you! Lasers can’t treat light blonde, light gray or white hair. Book a consultation, and we will let you know if it’s the best choice for you or not.

How does the laser hair removal feel?

Most clients are totally comfortable during treatment. Most describe it as a feeling of an elastic band being snapped or a fast pin prick. However the sensation doesn’t linger, it dissipates quickly. Everyone’s pain perception and pain tolerance is different, so we provide ice packs or numbing cream for the more sensitive. (We’ve never actually had a client need the numbing cream.)

Is Laser Hair Removal painful?

Most people describe it as a light snapping sensation. The sensations don’t linger and are gone almost immediately, but mostly, you will feel very little. If you are uncomfortable, an ice pack applied for a few seconds before lasering or numbing cream is available. We have never had a client require numbing cream. We got the Rolls Royce of lasers because we believe your comfortable experience is essential!

How many treatments are needed?

The number of treatments needed depends on many factors, such as thickness, density, and colour of the hair and skin, as well as the area of the body being treated. Everyone is different, and so is the number of treatments needed on each person, but we typically recommend 6-8 treatments.

Will I need touch-up appointments?

Not always. Sometimes, a touch-up session may be needed every year or two, but others might not need a touch-up for five or even ten years. Your need for touch ups depends on your body and your hormonal fluctuations.

Do you give discounts to people who have conditions that cause hair growth?

For people with hair growth disorders, PCOS and for people who are transitioning, a discount is given for maintenance appointments (after initial treatment is complete). A doctor’s note is required to access this discount.
