What is VirtueRF RF Microneedling?

VirtueRF radiofrequency microneedling combines two well-established skin rejuvenation technologies.

Microneedling: collagen stimulation

Microneedling creates tiny microchannels in the skin. These controlled micro-injuries trigger the body’s natural healing response, stimulating the production of new collagen and elastin.

Radiofrequency energy: contraction and remodelling

Radiofrequency energy is delivered through the needles into the dermis. This energy gently heats deeper layers of the skin, tightening collagen fibres and stimulating further collagen remodelling.
The result is firmer, smoother skin with improved texture, tone, and elasticity.

RF Microneedling vs Traditional Microneedling

Both traditional and RF microneedling stimulate collagen through tiny needle injuries, but RF microneedling also delivers heat into the dermis, stimulating even more collagen deeper in the skin and causing existing fibres to contract for greater tightening and lift—resulting in firmer, tighter skin with a noticable lifting effect.

Traditional microneedling is more comfortable during the treatment itself, but it typically leaves the skin red and hot on day one and pink and sensitive on day two, and makeup should be avoided until day three. RF microneedling can feel more intense during the procedure, but redness usually settles within about two hours, makeup can be worn the next day, and the recovery period is generally more comfortable.

How VirtueRF is Different Compared to Older RF Microneedling Systems

Morpheus8, Genius, and Potenza are among the most widely known RF microneedling systems.
All of these devices combine microneedling with radiofrequency energy to stimulate collagen and improve skin firmness, but they can be associated with significant drawbacks.

VirtueRF is part of an even newer generation of RF microneedling technology designed to increase comfort and reduce downtime compared to many earlier systems.

Earlier RF microneedling systems were effective but often associated with:

  • significant treatment discomfort
  • longer downtime

  • overheating of the skin surface
  • risk of PIH
  • risk of unintentional fat loss
  • nerve damage

VirtueRF introduces several engineering improvements designed to improve comfort, safety, and recovery/downtime. These improvements are listed below:

Downtime

VirtueRF treatments are designed to minimize downtime.

Most patients experience:

  • mild redness
  • temporary pinkness
  • mild warmth

These effects typically resolve within about two hours.
Unlike some earlier RF microneedling systems, VirtueRF typically does not produce prolonged burning, stinging, or intense heat sensations after treatment. Instead skin is mildly sensitive and only for a couple of hours.

Sunscreen and makeup can generally be applied the next day.

Subpulse Energy Delivery

VirtueRF provides the option to deliver RF energy in divided pulses rather than one continuous burst.
The energy pulse can be divided into anywhere from 1 to 10 subpulses, allowing energy to be delivered gradually instead of all at once.

This pulse-pause pattern makes the treatment so much more comfortable while still delivering effective thermal stimulation to the dermis.

Integrated Cooling Plate

VirtueRF uses an integrated cooling plate during treatment.

The cooling plate:

  • keeps the epidermis cool

  • increases patient comfort
  • helps push thermal energy deeper into the dermis
  • reduces the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
  • reduces post-treatment redness

Electric Motor Needle System

Virtue RF uses an electric motor to glide the needles smoothly into the skin.

Some earlier RF microneedling systems use spring-loaded solenoid mechanisms that create a sharper impact sensation as the needles are driven into the skin.

The Virtue RF’s electric motor-driven system allows the needles to enter the skin more smoothly and consistently, reducing the initial penetration shock and improving comfort.

Multiple Specialized Handpieces

VirtueRF includes three specialized handpieces with four different tip configurations, allowing treatments to be customized for different areas of the face and body.

Dedicated Eye Handpiece
Designed specifically for the delicate skin around the eyes. This handpiece allows treatment of areas that many RF microneedling systems cannot safely treat, including:

  • eyelid laxity

  • hooded upper eyelids

  • fine lines around the eyes

Few RF microneedling systems are designed to safely treat the eyelids, which is one of the reasons this specialized handpiece is such a valuable feature.

“Exact” Single-Needle Tip
This precision tip allows highly targeted treatment of very small or difficult areas, including:

  • ice-pick acne scars

  • milia

  • deep wrinkles

  • barcode lines around the mouth

Smart RF Tip
Commonly used for full-face rejuvenation and general skin quality improvements, helping address:

  • fine lines

  • enlarged pores

  • uneven texture

  • mild acne scarring

Deep RF Tip
Used when stronger collagen stimulation and structural support are desired, helping improve:

  • skin laxity

  • deeper wrinkles

  • jawline definition

  • overall tightening and lift

Insulated vs Non-Insulated RF Microneedling Tips

VirtueRF offers both insulated and non-insulated microneedling tips, allowing treatments to be customized depending on the skin concern.

Insulated tips deliver RF energy primarily at the needle tip deep in the dermis, which makes them useful for targeting skin laxity, deeper wrinkles, and acne scars while minimizing energy in the upper skin layers.

Non-insulated tips deliver RF energy along the entire needle, allowing treatment of both superficial and deeper skin layers. This approach is often useful for improving skin texture, pores, and overall skin quality.

Having access to both needle types allows VirtueRF treatments to be tailored to different concerns and treatment areas.

Numbing and Safety

Earlier RF microneedling systems often required BLT numbing cream (benzocaine, lidocaine, tetracaine) due to treatment discomfort.

VirtueRF treatments can typically be performed using 5% topical lidocaine, which significantly reduces total anesthetic exposure.

Lower anesthetic exposure helps reduce the risk of local anesthetic systemic toxicity, which can cause symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, ringing in the ears, confusion, and abnormal heart rhythms. In rare cases excessive systemic absorption of anesthetic can lead to methemoglobinemia, a life threatening condition that interferes with oxygen delivery in the blood.

Using a safer numbing approach improves safety margins and allows multiple treatment areas to be comfortably treated in one visit.

What RF Microneedling Can Improve

Virtue RF microneedling can improve:

  • fine lines and wrinkles
  • skin laxity – face & body
  • crepey skin texture

Frequently Asked Questions About Laser Skin Rejuvenation

Is RF Microneedling Painful?

VirtueRF treatments are generally very tolerable.

Most treatments are performed using 5% topical lidocaine or sometimes no numbing at all.

So far most clients rate the treatment between 2-6 out of 10 for discomfort.

When Will I See Results?

Early improvements can appear within 4–8 weeks after your first treatment as collagen production begins. However best results are seen after a series of treatments.

The most noticeable improvements typically occur 3–4 months after your final treatment, once collagen remodelling has fully developed.

How Many RF Microneedling Treatments Will I Need?

Most people benefit from a series of three treatments spaced about four to six weeks apart, although treatment plans vary depending on skin concerns and treatment goals.

Can RF Microneedling Help Barcode Lines and Ice Pick Scars?

Barcode lines and ice pick acne scars are two of the most difficult skin concerns to treat.

VirtueRF includes the EXACT single-needle handpiece, which allows precise treatment of individual scars and deep wrinkles.

This precision approach allows areas that are difficult to treat with traditional devices to be targeted more effectively.

Who Should Not Get RF Microneedling?

RF microneedling may not be appropriate for people who have:

  • pacemakers or implanted electrical devices
  • active skin infections
  • open wounds in the treatment area
  • pregnancy
  • certain metal implants in the treatment area

A consultation is required to determine whether treatment is appropriate.
